Cuddalore  is a fast growing industrial city and headquarters of Cuddalore district in the Tamil Nadu state of southern India. Located south of Pondicherry on the Bay of Bengal, Cuddalore has a large number of industries which employ a great deal of the city's population. Cuddalore is known for its picturesque beaches, particularly Silver Beach.Cuddalore was the Capital of the English Possessions on the Coromandal Coast from 1748 to 1752.

History: The ruins of Fort St David stand witness to the history of Cuddalore. As a small fort built by a Hindu merchant, it occupied by the Marathas after the capture of Gingi by Shivaji in 1677. The British purchased it from them in 1690, which also included the adjacent towns and villages that would fall within the range of a random shot of a piece.




Formation of the District:      

The history of the systematic administration of   the Land Revenue of erstwhile South Arcot District  begins with the acquisition from the Nawab in 1801,when the Nawab made over the Carnatic to the Company ,Captain Graham was  appointed to take charge of the District lying  between Palar and Portonovo rivers and become the first Collector South Arcot.

The then district consisted of the 21 Taluks of Arcot, Vellore, Thiruvathur, Polur, Arani (The  Jagir  of  that name) Wandiwash,Chetpet ,  Thiruvannamalai , Gingee ,Tindivanam , Valudavur, Villupuram , Anniyur ,Tirukoilur ,  Thiruvennainallur ,Tiruvadi , Elavanasur, Kallakurichi ,Vridhachalam ,Tittagudi and  Bhuvanagiri but excluded the form of Fort St.David and the territory of Pondicherry,both of which had been separately acquired and were separately administered.In April 1805, the then  Taluk of Mannarkudi (which is included in what is now known  as Chidambaram) was added from Tiruchirapalli to this huge charge.

In 1808,However Arcot,Vellore,Thiruvathur ,Polur ,  and Arani Jagir were transferred to NorthArcot  and Wandiwash to Cheingelput while the Fort  St.David  and Pondicherry villages (which at different time had been under both,the Collector and the commercial resident at Cuddalore) were incorporated with the District.In 1816,Pondicherry was finally restored to the French and erstwhile South Arcot assumed practically its position.Cuddalore ,which is District Headquarters for South Arcot District for more than a century.This has been mentioned everywhere in the history.The present Cuddalore District has been formed on 30.9.1993.

The Historic importance of this District has played roll since the time of "IDICASAM". Mr. Robert Clive started his adminstration from this district. He built the residence and administrative that building which are still the administrative residence of district administration.

3. Field of Lignite

The abandan of availability of Lignite is Treasure from this district to human community. Coal Mine are our of which heavy power of electricity is produced and distributed throughout the country.

4. Ore of Iron

The iron ore was found and exported in heavy amount. Now the outcome from that iron is reduced.

5. Treasure of Cashew Nuts

Cashewnut is the rich crop of this district. Maximum export being done, which is the important commercial crop of this district.

6. Sweet District

The world famous PARRY sugar and Choclates are come out from this district.
